About AQUIS

Culbert Lu launched AQUIS Law with the single-minded purpose of helping small and mid-size emerging companies achieve their goals by utilizing his over 20 years of legal expertise to provide real, practical, business solutions (not theoretical concepts) in a cost-efficient manner. Culbert’s unique combination of transactional and litigation experience, developed both in private practice and as an in-house attorney/general counsel over the last two decades, affords him a comprehensive and nuanced perspective on how to solve the key legal issues growing companies face on a daily basis. AQUIS’ clients are primarily comprised of high-growth start-up companies in a multitude of industries, including tech, food manufacturing, private equity and professional services, as well as non-profit organizations and high net-worth individuals. Culbert acts as an external general counsel and trusted partner to these entities, advising on both critical tactical issues and long-term strategic opportunities.
Prior to founding AQUIS, Culbert was the Chief Legal & HR Officer of ARYZTA LLC, a multi-billion dollar revenue food manufacturer, where he developed and evolved the legal platform for a company experiencing explosive growth by managing strategic acquisitions and supporting commercial operations in every facet. In addition to his legal acumen, his experience as the leader of the Human Resources function at ARYZTA sets him apart, as it provides him a rare insight into the inner workings of the people side of business. This allows him to not just solve critical labor and employment issues, but proactively prevent workforce problems before they arise. Previous to this role, Culbert was Senior Counsel at GE Capital Real Estate (and a predecessor entity, Arden Realty, Inc.) for nearly 10 years, where he was the global leader of GE’s Leasing and Property Operations Practice Group and had legal oversight of a portfolio of over 30 million square feet of office and industrial assets, after starting his career as a litigator at the prestigious law firm of Allen Matkins LLP, an Am Law 200 firm.
Culbert has a J.D. from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law (2000) and a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (1997), and has been recognized multiple times as a top "Leader in Law" by the Los Angeles Business Journal. Culbert is also a Board member of STEAM:CODERS, a non-profit organization committed to providing critical science, technology, engineering, art and math classes to disadvantaged and underserved communities. He was born and raised in Northern California, and currently resides in Manhattan Beach, CA with his wife and two children, where he is active in the community.
